Light Roast vs. Dark Roast: Which Coffee Is Right for You?

One of the most common questions we hear: should I go light or dark? The truth is there's no wrong answer — just the roast that fits your taste. Here's what actually changes when beans spend more time in the roaster.

What Roast Level Really Means

Roast level describes how long and how hot the green coffee beans are roasted. Lighter roasts are pulled earlier; darker roasts stay in longer, developing deeper, bolder flavors.

Light Roast: Bright and Lively

Light roasts keep more of the bean's original character — think brighter, slightly more acidic, with subtle fruit or floral notes. They're smooth and easy-drinking. If that's your style, start with Trailhead, our straight-shooting light-roast breakfast blend, or our creamy French Vanilla.

Medium Roast: The Balanced Middle

Medium roasts strike a balance — rounded body, gentle acidity, and classic coffee flavor. Our Cowpuncher blend lives right in this sweet spot.

Dark Roast: Bold and Smoky

Dark roasts bring deep, rich, sometimes smoky flavor with low acidity and a heavy body. For the bold crowd, try our six-bean Roughstock or whiskey-barrel-aged Mulekicked.

The Caffeine Myth

Contrary to popular belief, dark roast isn't "stronger" in caffeine. Light and dark roasts have nearly identical caffeine levels — the difference is flavor, not kick.
